Special
Retirement Honors
Hyland
Johns, retired senior vice president, was given special
honors from the Asplundh Board of Directors on June 5. Hyland
(right) was presented with a Gold Corporate Merit Award lapel
pin by Chairman of the Board Carl Asplundh, Jr. (left) for his
invaluable, long-term contributions to the company. In addition,
a specially-designed and engraved commemorative ring was given
to him as a token of the Boards respect and esteem.
In 1950, Hyland put his love of trees and his forestry education
to work for Asplundh in his home state of Pennsylvania. Prior
to that he had done some private tree work and served in the
U.S. Navy Seabees during World War II. Hyland had also earned
a bachelors degree in forestry from Purdue University
in Indiana and in 1951 received a masters degree in urban
forestry from Michigan State University. At first he worked
in several states doing line clearance and spray work. Then
he moved into the Home Office to develop the Personnel and Training
Department. In 1962, Hyland was promoted to vice president and
was appointed to the Board of Directors in 1969. Over the years,
he sponsored numerous field and specialty divisions. In 1990,
he retired from day-to-day operations.
In addition
to his career with Asplundh, Hyland has always been active in
civic and industry organizations. A staunch supporter of the
International Society of Arboriculture (ISA), he was a co-founder
of the ISA Research Trust in 1975 and his service was recognized
when the Trust named a grant program after him a few years ago.
He has received numerous awards from the ISA, the National Arborist
Association and the National Arbor Day Foundation for his achievements
in promoting better arboricultural practices and education.
From all
of us at Asplundh, thank you and best wishes, Hyland!
Keith
Fowler, vice president and 24-year Asplundh veteran, joined
the coveted ranks of the retired in April.
Representatives from Duke Energy and Asplundh held a farewell
luncheon in his honor on April 18. Vice President and Sponsor

him for his efforts on behalf of the company.
Keith joined
Asplundh in his home state of South Carolina in 1976 with three
years of prior tree trimming experience. By 1979, he was promoted

operations in the western Carolinas region, serving Duke Energy
and various rural electric cooperative and municipal accounts.
