Merit Awards

Staying
calm, but acting quickly and compassionately in an emergency
situation is easier said than done. Foreman William Meredith
of the Pat White Region in Florida did just that on February
1, 2000 when a woman, Betty Whaley, frantically called
him away from his work site to help her son-in-law who
had collapsed in her Jacksonville home.
William
immediately attemped cardio-pulmonary rescusitation (CPR)
to try to revive the 44-year-old man, Bill Claussen, who
was suffering from the effects of skin cancer and radiation
treatments to his brain. Tragically, it was too late and
Mr. Claussen could not be revived. The Claussen/Whaley
family was very grateful to William for his willingness
to help a stranger in need and for the compassion he and
his crew showed to Mr. Claussen’s 21-month-old
daughter who unfortunately witnessed the tragedy.
The
father of the victim, Robert Claussen, wrote a moving
thank-you letter, which said:
“My
family and I were deeply moved by the compassion and caring
response of these men. If your company has some means
of recognizing these men for their heroic deed, I encourage
you to do so. Their action and obvious training is certainly
a credit to Asplundh ... as a responsible corporate citizen
in the Jacksonville area. May God bless these men for
their willingness to help a stranger in need.”
In
honor of William’s good deed, the Asplundh Board of Directors
bestowed upon him a Silver Merit Award. Vice President
Pat White recently caught up with William, while he was
working for Florida Power & Light Co., and presented
the specially engraved silver pin to him, along with the
company’s appreciation of his compassion and generosity.
