In
Memory of
Emilie K. Asplundh
1904 - 2000
It
is with sadness that we announce the passing of Emilie K. Asplundh,
widow of company founder Carl Hj. Asplundh, on March 20, 2000
at her home in Bryn Athyn, Pennsylvania. She was the last living
member of the founding generation of the Asplundh Tree Expert
Co. and played a critical supportive role in the growth and
success of the company.
A devoted
wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, “Mrs. Carl”
was always very active in the community as well. For 30 years,
she volunteered at Abington Memorial Hospital. Other volunteer
activities included the Board of the West Chester University
Foundation, Women’s Board of Abington Memorial Hospital, board
member of the Visiting Nurse Association, board member of Woods
School and Old York Road Committee of the Philadelphia Orchestra.
Mrs. Carl
was a 1927 graduate of West Chester University with a degree
in drama and music. She married Carl in 1930, two years after
he and his brothers, Griffith and Lester, had formed the company.
While raising a family during and after the Great Depression,
Mrs. Carl stayed active in drama and music. She also became
a master gardener over the years and hosted many charity events
in her lovely home and garden. Her rose garden was featured
on the cover of the Summer 1993 issue of The Asplundh TREE.
At her
memorial service on March 23, Reverend Kurt Asplundh (son of
the late company founder Lester Asplundh) said, “... she had
the rare ability to make other people feel special, whoever
they were.” Surviving Mrs. Carl are her four children, Edward
K. Asplundh (former company president), Carl Hj. Asplundh, Jr.
(current Chairman of the Board), Christopher B. Asplundh (current
company president) and Emily Jane Lemole; 20 grandchildren;
and 15 great grandchildren.
